"Introduction to DB2 Spatial Extender"
Presentation Abstract:
The concept of Spatial Data is gaining significant interest in the database community. In a nutshell, “Spatial Data” can be defined as "that data that pertains to the space occupied by objects and the relationships between those objects." This has wide-reaching implications for insurance applications, retail systems, banking systems, marketing systems and almost any type of application that requires a link to some geographic information.
The ability to store this type of data in DB2 gives DB2 users a distinct advantage. This presentation will provide further explanation of spatial data and how DB2 can be used to manage this type of data.
Presenter Biography:
Trevor is an independent consultant specialising in the design of high-end operational and decision support databases.
Trevor has worked with DB2 on the LUW and OS/390 platforms for fourteen years in total. He has worked in database administration, design and performance audit and consulting roles for clients throughout Australia, and in the United States, South America, and the Asian region.
Trevor has been a regular presenter at the Asia Pacific IDUG conference.
This presentation draws on his experiences over the past few years with a variety of DB2 UDB for LUW projects, both operational and data warehousing, containing a spatial component.

4:30pm onwards (presentation)Venue: The Flinders Room
Langham Hotel
1 Southgate Avenue, SouthbankPresenters: John McKinnon, IBM
Stephen Priestley, IBMJohn McKinnon presented on:
"A Quick (and recent) Overview of DB2 UDB V8 for zOS"
Presentation Abstract:
DB2 UDB for zOS V8 has been generally available for almost a year, after a long beta program.
This has been the most significant version of DB2 since Version 1, and many sites are now beginning planning for migration to Version 8.
This session will give you a quick refresher on the significant changes to Version 8, share some of the lessons learned over the last year and provide some hints and tips that you should be aware of before you start planning your migration.
Presenter Biography:
John McKinnon has been working with IBM in the DB2 arena since DB2 V1.1 became generally available on OS/390 in 1985.
John has worked on many implementations of DB2 on all platforms, utilizing all aspects of DB2.
John and is a regular presenter at DB2 User Groups and has been involved in MDUG for many years including as the IBM representative on the MDUG Board.
Stephen Priestley presented on:
"How to Impress People at a Cocktail Party about DB2 on Linux"
Presentation Abstract:
Linux is becoming more and more prominent in the IT Community, with many enterprises and companies developing new applications and migrating existing applications to run on this platform.
DB2 UDB works under Linux on a number of hardware platforms (including zSeries), which allows new and existing database applications to run on Linux.
This session will outline the features of DB2 that specifically allow it to exploit a Linux environment.

60 City Road South MelbournePresenter: Terry Purcell Terry presented on:
"Exploitation of Query Optimisation"
(includes little known updates in V7 and V8)
Presentation Abstract:
"Much has changed with query rewrite and optimization in DB2 V7, and of course, V8. The best new features are well hidden in the documentation, or worse, not documented at all. In this presentation we will avoid those features that don't require explanation, or can be seen in all of the publications, but instead investigate the little known performance enhancements that have made it into the latest releases. We'll also discuss how to enable these features, why they are important, and how best to exploit them for your queries."
Presenter Biography:
Terry Purcell is a member of the DB2 for z/OS Optimization Team at the IBM Silicon Valley Lab. Terry has more than 12 years experience with DB2 in Database Administration and application development. He is an accomplished presenter and author on SQL optimization and performance, having been voted Best Overall Speaker for the 2001 IDUG Asia/Pacific Conference.
XMAS BREAK UP MEETING
Date: Thursday 4th December 2003 Time: 4:30pm (registration from 4:15pm) Venue: BMC Software
Level 1
1 Spring Street, MelbournePresenter: Ric Techow This meeting will include a discussion on:
"A Potpourri Of DB2 Tuning"
by Ric Techow as well an open forum. Bring along your DB2 issues and get some contribution / feedback from other members of the Melbourne DB2 community!
You will to have your opportunity to ask questions, express your opinion, submit your examples or just listen to others.
Following Ric's presentation, MDUG will be providing XMAS drinks (beer, wine and soft drink) and food to celebrate the festive season. For those that can stay for a drink and a chat, the last drinks will be at 6.45pm for a 7.00pm finish.
Presentation Abstract:
This presentation is a collection of miscellaneous DB2 tuning issues and some possible solutions that may be helpful.
Not everything has a solution, sometimes we just need to be aware that there is a problem and what the tradeoffs are.
The areas of the tuning points are
SQL tuning hints
List screen cursors
Dynamic prepare costs
List prefetch and dynamic prefetch
Transaction pair tuning
Opthints
Tuning DB2 read only commits –
They can cost significant CPU
Impact of Release(Deallocate)
Bufferpool residency time
Is it long enough?
Presenter Biography:
Ric has specialized in performance tuning for 13 years, with a strong interest in performance at high processor utilization.
Recently Ric he has been investigating how to quantify the external dollar savings of tuning.

"DB2 and XML – A Match Made In Heaven"
Presentation Abstract:
XML is fast becoming the standard method by which different enterprises communicate with each other. As a result, more and more business documents are being created as XML documents, which need to be stored, managed, retrieved, acted upon...........
In this session we will discuss the differences between data-centric and document-centric documents and their usage with databases, how XML is commonly used with relational databases, and the tools available in DB2 to work and store XML.
We will cover:
Webservices
Stylesheets
Shredding
Storing
Publishing (sqlxml)
The native store.

| Presenter: | David Pickering, BMC Software |
David Pickering will be conducting a discussion forum on:
"DB2 performance and do you need to care?".
In general 80% of your DB2 problems are caused by application issues, generally bad SQL, or poor index design.
Well a good approach is to move through the specific areas where problems can arise starting with the APPLICATION then the DATABASE then the SYSTEM followed by the ENVIRONMENT. This sequence makes sense because the majority of DB2 performance problems are caused by the application code, whether in the host language or the SQL. The second biggest cause of performance problems is the database design, and so on.
The Intention is to discuss what can be done to help identify these issues. What should be looked for, what tools can be used to help you find the problem, and what don't these tools help you with.
Come an participate with your experience, practical hints and examples from your environment. No restrictions on any subject of interest.
Presenter Biography:
David is a database specialist at BMC Software, where he has been working for the past 5 years specialising in database technologies such as DB2 for OS/390, Oracle, DB2 UDB and MS SQL Server.
Prior to joining BMC Software David worked at Coles Myer as a Database Administrator, managing Oracle and DB2 environments.
As part of his role at BMC Software David presents on a regular basis on BMC Software’s products, both database and non-database related.
David has also presented at IDUG conferences in Australia and the USA, and Oracle User Group Conferences in Australia.

| Presenter: | Stephen Priestly, IBM Australia |
At the meeting Stephen Priestly from IBM Australia introduced:
DB2 Information Integrator
Stephen has recently returned from USA, where he was preparing a "Red Book" on this subject.
IBM DB2 Information
Integrator V8.1 provides the foundation for a strategic information
integration framework that helps customers to access, manipulate, and
integrate diverse, distributed, and real-time data.
DB2 Information Integrator data is accessed using standard SQL and thus can be used with existing
development environments and analytical tools common in today's IT shops.
IBM DB2 Information
Integrator V8.1, built on DB2 technology, enables users to abstract a common
data model across diverse and distributed data and content sources and to use
SQL to access and manipulate them as though they were a single source.
This presentation gave an overview of DB2 Information Integrator describing the extensive capability of this product.
